Pain
The worst thing you have felt is only that. To a child, dropping an ice cream cone is the equivalent of you losing your best friend. How lucky are the children that they may experience such a great range of emotion from what we may consider trivial events? With each pain we will be rewarded an equal amount of joy. Does not a starving man take greater pleasure in a stale crust of bread? Though rewards may be indirect, they most certainly exist for pain is a catalyst that allows us a host of positive emotions.
The greatest confusion lies in our distorted view of the beast. We look at it as the mate that cheated, the car that broke down, perhaps the ill friend. All of this we consider “pain” or “painful” yet we do not recognize pain as the reaction, not the event. If we look at it in these terms we begin to recognize a certain amount of control. Perhaps you cannot control the event, the reaction however is entirely up to you.
Pain, is not unlike quicksand. Fight and you’ll surely be drawn deeper. Relax, pull yourself to higher ground.
