ALTERNATIVE TREATMENTS
Most of those who suffer from Bipolar Disorder, as well as their doctors, would probably agree that it is a condition that is difficult to treat effectively. Although more medications are becoming available to stabilize moods, they are not always fully satisfactory for patients. Many Bipolars find that available medications can lead to significant side effects, or find that after an exhaustive trial-and-error process, their mood swings continue to present major problems. Alternative treatments may give Bipolars an additional tool they can use to control their illness. In some cases, alternative treatment may work with medications in a complimentary manner, helping them work better, or lowering necessary dosages. In situations where mood stabilizers are deemed unacceptable by the patient and their doctor due to health complications, alternative treatment may be used to help lessen mood swings to the point where patients can lead satisfying and more normal lives. There are a wide variety of vitamins, minerals, and amino acids that are related to the maintenance of a normal mood. Most Americans do not eat ideal diets, and therefore may be deficient in the Recommended Daily Allowances (RDAS) for many nutritional compounds. It is believed that the RDAs for many substances are designed only to protect individuals from life threatening disease, and that other conditions, including mood problems, may occur as a result of deficiencies even if the RDAs are met. Also, evidence suggests that people inclined towards mood disorders require higher amounts of some nutritional substances either because certain compounds are not easily absorbed, or because higher amounts are necessary due to their abnormal metabolisms. Herbs and mood-stabilizing compounds may also be useful in the treatment of Bipolar Disorder. Herbs are not inherently required by the body, but they can suppress the symptoms of mood disorders due to the pharmacological actions they exhibit. Mood-stabilizing compounds such as Lecithin, L-Taurine, and GABA, have also been found beneficial in the treatment of Bipolar Disorder. The actions of these substances are similar to prescription medications, but usually cause far fewer side effects. Holistic massage therapy and acupuncture may also be considered for alternative treatment. Self-help exercises are also beneficial, since they promote independence and stability. Alternative treatments can be helpful, but they usually require a substantial commitment. They can also be quite expensive, since most insurance companies do not cover such treatments.
