BIPOLAR DISORDER AND SUICIDEBipolar Disorder often results in years of needless suffering, and death by suicide because it was not recognized and treated properly. Untreated Bipolar patients have a higher mortality rate than patients with most types of heart diseases or cancer. Most Bipolar's who attempt suicide do so shortly after the onset of the illness. People who suffer from depression or Bipolar Disorder are more likely to commit suicide than those in other psychiatric or medical risk groups. More than two thirds of all those who died from suicide suffered from depression or Bipolar Disorder. Studies indicate that 25-50% of Bipolar's attempt suicide at least once. If you are feeling suicidal, there are steps you can take to manage these feelings. First, remember that with time, patience, and proper treatment, these emotions will pass. Refrain from drinking alcohol or taking unnecessary drugs, as these chemicals could increase your suicidal feelings. Seek the help of a fiiend, relative, suicide hotline, or psychiatric professional. Having someone to talk to can ease your feelings of being trapped or loneliness. If someone is threatening to commit suicide, take them seriously. Don't try to handle the situation alone. Contact the person's mental health professional, a suicide hotline, or dial 911. Listen to the person, maintain eye contact, and try to hold the person's hand if the situation permits. Determine if the person has a specific plan for suicide. Remind the person that things will get better, and that suicide is a permanent solution to a temporary problem. Don't promise confidentiality, as you may have to talk to his/her doctor in order to protect the person from himself/herself. Don't leave the person alone, if possible. BY RICHARD SUTPHEN
