These Hands
These Hands - August 2001
Eat the fruit of
your labor, only to find yourself troubled by hunger again. Pile grain
high in the silos, only to find it fall victim to rodent and rot. Find
not treasure in harvest, but love for the tools with which you may sow again.
Crying for mistakes
past is liken to a farmer whom, after his crop had spoiled, kept it within
silos. Kept it that each day he may remember and weep for his loss.
Better to cast it across fields or feed it to pigs that it may fertilize and
insure the next crop.
Carpenter, do not invest your heart within the walls and mortar. For as water will crack the foundation and termites weaken it’s beams, so will the heart die with the passage of time and each fallen board. Love not for the home which you have built, but for the hands with which you have built it. Wealth does not lie within things you have fashioned, but within the hands to raise it yet again.
Find joy in the
labor, your cupboard will never be bare.
